RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 The complementation profile of REMEMBER in post-colonial Englishes T2 El perfil de complementación de REMEMBER en los ingleses post-coloniales A1 Garcia Castro, Laura K1 5705.13 Sintaxis, Análisis Sintáctico K1 57 Lingüística AB The goal of this project is to make a contribution to the field of Present Day English linguistics, particularly in relation to Post-colonial Englishes (i.e. varieties of English that emerged as a result of the process of colonisation). The aim of this project will be to study the finite and non-finite verbal complementation patterns of a verb that is usually susceptible to variation which is determined by both language internal and external variables. Therefore, first a theoretical background will be established as the basis of the thesis by compiling all the information available about complementation patterns in Post-colonial Englishes but also in British English, which is the variety used as a reference. This literature review will justify the study of the verbal complementation patterns of the verb selected, remember, that I will carry out in this thesis. Then, I will search this verb using GloWbE (Corpus of Global Web-based English) and I will analyse the verbal complementation patterns that it displays in each variety of English taking into account both language internal and external variables. The data retrieved will be thoroughly analysed and then coded using statistical packages (e.g. SPSS, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The outcome of this study will provide a comprehensive overview about variation and change of verbal complementation patterns in Post-colonial Englishes and about the variables that motivate them. Moreover, it will help to understand the genesis and development of Post-colonial Englishes and the causes that drive linguistic change in Present Day English.
