The proper management of waste is crucial to minimize the degradation of the environment and promote the transition towards a sustainable society. As a consequence, the environmental dimension has acquired greater importance in the design of processes, investment decision making and productive management.This proposal focuses on the pollution linked to wastewater in water treatment plants, on the continuous improvement to be implemented in WWTPs, as well as the extraction of those waste that present an option for revaluation through the use of ionic liquids.Among the molecules that are most interesting are currently emerging: emerging pollutants, personal hygiene products or drugs, as well as the recovery of compounds that can generate added value from waste from an urban treatment plant, as is the case of the volatile fatty acids.
