These substitutions are usually made to modify tactical aspects and improve team performance (Del Corral et al., 2008, Myers, 2012). However, the individual technical-tactical performance of substitute players and the effect of substitutions on teams’ tactical behaviour have not yet been analysed (Hills et al., 2018). This information could greatly complement the existing scientific literature on substitutions in soccer. With regard to physical performance, substitutions also suppose an effective strategy to counteract the effects of fatigue (Bradley et al., 2014; Hills et al., 2018). Several studies have shown that players’ physical performance declines from the first to the second half of soccer matches as a possible consequence of fatigue (Bradley et al., 2009; Bradley et al., 2013; Di Salvo et al., 2009; Mohr et al., 2003). However, this decrease in physical performance could also be influenced by other factors, such as the increase in the duration of game interruptions towards the end of soccer matches (Linke et al., 2018). Therefore, it seems necessary to analyse the changes in the physical performance of the players throughout the match taking into account the effective playing time and also considering their playing position.
